Positive Reinforcement in Gallery Walk (+2)

Uswah ali May 12, 2015

Positive reinforcement involves the addition of a reinforcing stimulus following a behavior that makes it more likely that the behavior will occur again in the future. When a favorable outcome, event, or reward occurs after an action, that particular response or behavior will be strengthened (www.psychology.about.com). We can conclude that positive reinforcement as an effective stimulus is needed for learners to learn more. After gaining a reward , they will strengthen their efforts in learning to improve their English.

Students did a lot of activities in the previous academic year. They also experienced various attractive learning processes. They did great jobs, terrific work, and had excellent outcomes. They will be highly motivated in learning English at higher levels if they recognize what work they did, and what their achievements were.

One alternative positive reinforcement for students to learn English at a higher level is the Gallery Walk at the end of the academic year. The Gallery Walk consists of students’ great works for one academic year. The teacher set the gallery to appreciate students’ hard works, and it also acts as a media to learn about other friends’ jobs. The Gallery walk is chosen because it gives students a sense of significance. Students can recognize what they did in an academic year, and they will experience self-reward. They can also review their works, and they will feel good. Besides, they can learn from other friends’ work from different classes. They learn how to appreciate others. In addition, this gallery will be a favorable reward for them, so they will be aware of where their strengths lie and capitalize on them. Thus, it will encourage repetition of good deeds toward learning English.

Positive reinforcement leads to high motivation for someone to reach their goals. It can be a positive factor to motivate students to do a better job. They will work harder to increase the quality of their work and achieve goals at higher education levels. Even though it is a bit hard to explain what their motivation is, positive reinforcement will help the teacher to “turn it on” in students. The Gallery walk, as a positive reinforcement for one academic year and it will facilitate students to increase their self motivation for learning English and improving the quality of their work.

“After working so hard, it is time for awarding their works. Students also learn about other friends’ work from different classes. They need reinforcement to motivate their English learning and to advance to higher levels. This gallery walk is chosen as an positive reinforcement for students in the end of the academic year.”

It’s dedicated to my students, tenth graders in 2012/2013 academic year.
